MARCH 2007 NEWSLETTER

March 1, 2007

Greetings from Shadowood Farm,

Bob has been watching the radar all day and hoping that we might actually get some rain today...Even if your gardens are well established, with this kind of dry weather - you may want to do some supplemental hand watering. Most Florida gardens are typically on various forms of "life support", so with our serious drought conditions, please take the time to run through your irrigation system to make certain that your heads are all working properly and that you are watering in an efficient manner. This is not the time to throw out unnecessary amounts of water, it is the time to make sure that plants and trees that REALLY need water are getting at least a little bit of it.

Interesting tidbit from a conversation today with a customer that we did some work for a three years ago: "Those little Holly Trees you guys put in have never grown much. They are still alive, but haven't done much." Hmmmm...If one were to sufficiently water and fertilize on a regular basis, one would be surprised at how well things will grow...This particular job was in wonderful, sandy soil, so it would be next to impossible to over-water. Even Native plants need water to get established as well as during drought times to stay healthy!

Many of us had some frost damage in our last go-round of cold temperatures, but no worries. Try to resist the urge to cut anything back hard for another 10-15 days, then, have a ball and don't forget to feed!

Though the farm looks pretty darn "crispy" right now....we will be open for retail on the following Thursdays, Fridays and Saturday from 9-4 in March.
